Understanding Formative and Summative
What Is Formative Assessment?
Formative assessment happens during the learning journey. Think of it as an ongoing conversation between the educator and the learner — a chance to check understanding, adjust techniques, and improve performance before the final evaluation.
Formative assessment often feels slightly more informal, than a summative assessment. Through ongoing format feedback is given for encouragement and constructive correction takes place. It gives both learners and tutors the knowledge needed to accurately analyses knowledge and skill.
This type of assessment is outlined by the awarding organisation. A logbook will detail the outcomes an assessor must see demonstrated and knowledge that students must showcase, these are usually assignment and test based.
Key benefit: It offers the student some familiarity & control over the process.
What Is Summative Assessment?
Summative assessment comes at the end of a learning phase and is used to evaluate whether learners have met the required outcomes or standards. This can be described as a final exam, end point assessment or theory exam. Meaning the pass/fail outcome is judged on the day.
Summative assessments are usually formally booked in with an awarding organisation representative, this assessment is graded, and marked by the representative. A certificate is produced when criteria for pass mark is achieved, making them vital for accountability and achievement.
Key benefit: It validates competence and confirms knowledge and skill is at a standard set by the awarding organisation. Ideal for employers.
